The University of San Diego was founded in 1949 by the Bishop Charles Francis Buddy of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego. It was initially established as the San Diego College for Women, a two-year college that provided an education to women in a Catholic environment. In 1972, the college became coeducational and changed its name to the University of San Diego. The school has since grown significantly and now offers more than 80 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate programs.
