The University of Regina was established in 1911 as Regina College, the first degree-granting institution in Saskatchewan. Initially, the college was affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan, and offered courses leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1961, Regina College became an independent institution and was renamed the University of Saskatchewan–Regina. In 1974, it became an autonomous university with its own Board of Governors and Senate. In 1977, it adopted its current name: the University of Regina.

Over the years, the university has grown substantially in size and scope. It currently offers over 100 undergraduate degrees and more than 55 graduate programs in a variety of disciplines including arts and science, business administration, education, engineering and applied science, fine arts and music, health sciences, kinesiology & health studies and social work.
