The University of Puerto Rico at Medical Sciences Campus (UPR-MSC) has a long and storied history. Founded in 1903, it was originally established as the Hospital of San Juan de Dios. It was the first hospital in Puerto Rico to offer medical services to the public. In 1911, the hospital was renamed Hospital de la Cruz Roja (Red Cross Hospital) and became a teaching hospital for medical students. In 1946, the Puerto Rican government took over ownership of the hospital and changed its name to San Juan Municipal Hospital.
