University of Prince Edward Island Acceptance Rate, Average GPA, SAT and ACT Scores

The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is a public liberal arts university located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Established in 1969, UPEI was the first publicly funded university in the province. The university was created through the amalgamation of two existing institutions: St. Dunstan’s University and Prince of Wales College. Both universities had a long and distinguished history dating back to the 19th century when higher education was largely unavailable on PEI.

St. Dunstan’s University was founded in 1855 as an Anglican college and seminary by Bishop Edmund Morris, who wanted to provide an education for young men preparing for ministry in the Church of England. Initially, St. Dunstan’s provided a classical education with courses such as Latin, Greek, mathematics and rhetoric as well as religious studies. In 1873, St. Dunstan’s became an affiliate of Dalhousie University granting academic degrees from Dalhousie until 1921 when it became an independent degree-granting institution known as St. Dunstan’s University or SDU for short. Check LOCALCOLLEGEEXPLORER.COM for a list of colleges and universities in Texas.

Prince of Wales College was established in 1834 by Rev John Stuart following a successful petition to King William IV for funds to create a college on PEI for educating “the sons of farmers to become teachers and preachers” . Initially called The Central Academy it was renamed Prince of Wales College after Queen Victoria’s visit to Charlottetown in 1860 following Confederation talks that year that ultimately led to the formation of Canada in 1867 . Like St Dunstan’s College it offered a classical education but also included modern subjects like chemistry and natural science which were not available at its rival institution at that time
