The University of Portland was founded in 1901 by the Most Reverend George Albert Christensen, Archbishop of Oregon. It began as a college for men and was originally called Columbia University. In 1935, it was renamed the University of Portland after the city in which it is located. The university has grown significantly since its founding and now offers over 70 undergraduate majors and minors, more than 50 graduate programs, and numerous certificates and specializations.
