The University of Ottawa was founded in 1848 as the College of Bytown by the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa, Joseph-Bruno Guigues. Initially, it offered only secondary level courses and was located in Lower Town. In 1865, it was granted university status by an Act of the Legislative Assembly and became known as the University of Ottawa. The university moved to its current location on what is now known as “Sandy Hill” in 1876, and has since expanded to become one of Canada’s largest universities.
