The University of North Texas was founded in 1890 as the Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute. It was the first public institution of higher learning in the state of Texas, and it was established to provide training for teachers. In 1901, the name changed to North Texas State Normal College, and in 1949, it became known as North Texas State College. The school underwent several more name changes over the years until finally settling on its current name in 1988. In 1972, UNT achieved university status and began offering doctoral degrees.
Since then, UNT has continued to grow both academically and physically. The school now offers more than 140 degree programs and serves more than 40,000 students each year. UNT also has a thriving research program with some of the most advanced research facilities in the country.
