The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) was founded in 1963 as the first public arts conservatory in the United States. The school was created by North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford and former UNC President William Friday, who wanted to create a school that would provide intensive training in the performing and visual arts. The school opened its doors with just one faculty member and three students, but quickly grew to include more than 500 students enrolled in six different schools: Dance, Design & Production, Drama, Filmmaking, Music and Visual Arts. Since its inception, UNCSA has seen many notable alumni including actors Forest Whitaker and Kathy Bates as well as musician Branford Marsalis. Today UNCSA is dedicated to providing its students with an exceptional training environment that emphasizes collaboration between all artistic disciplines. The school’s faculty consists of professional artists who are experts in their fields and have extensive experience teaching aspiring artists from across the globe. Check lawfaqs for information about Alpena Community College.
