The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) was founded in 1946 as the Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina. It was a two-year commuter college offering evening classes for returning World War II veterans. In 1949, the Charlotte Center became the fourth campus of the Consolidated University of North Carolina and was renamed the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

In 1961, UNCC opened its first permanent building, Fretwell Building. In 1965, UNCC became a four-year college and began offering its first bachelor’s degrees in 1967. Over the next decade, UNCC continued to expand its academic offerings and physical facilities. In 1969, it opened a new library and in 1973, it opened its first residence hall. In 1975, UNCC officially became a university and adopted its current name: The University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
