The University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA) started as a small liberal arts college in 1927. It was founded by the citizens of Buncombe County, who wanted to create a college for the residents of the region. The original campus was located in downtown Asheville, and it offered a two-year program that included courses in mathematics, history, English, and science.
In 1940, the college moved from downtown Asheville to its current location on the crest of Beaucatcher Mountain. At this time, it became part of the University of North Carolina system and began offering four-year degree programs in addition to its two-year program. In 1969, UNCA became an independent institution within the UNC system and began offering its first master’s degree program.
Since then, UNCA has continued to grow and expand its academic offerings. In 2006, it added a Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies as well as several new undergraduate majors such as Environmental Studies and Sustainability Studies. In 2009, UNCA opened a new library that houses over 500,000 volumes of books and periodicals; this makes UNCA one of the largest libraries in Western North Carolina. Today, UNCA offers over 30 undergraduate majors and minors as well as multiple graduate programs across various disciplines including business administration, education technology, environmental studies, health sciences and public affairs management.
