The University of New Haven was founded in 1920 as the New Haven YMCA Junior College. It was established to provide a higher education for the youth of the city, offering classes in liberal arts and sciences. Initially, the college had only one building and 35 students enrolled. Over the years, however, it grew rapidly and began granting bachelor’s degrees in 1929. By 1940, enrollment had grown to more than 400 students.
In 1969, the college changed its name to the University of New Haven and began offering master’s degrees in various fields. In 1976, it was granted university status by the Connecticut State Board of Governors for Higher Education and began offering doctoral programs. Today, it is a nationally ranked university with over 6,000 students enrolled from around the world. It has an extensive academic program with more than 100 undergraduate majors and concentrations as well as 75 graduate programs in six different colleges.
