The University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) was founded in 1905 as the Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney. It was established to provide teacher training and education to the residents of central and western Nebraska. The school initially opened with just two faculty members and five students, but quickly grew in size and reputation. In 1921, the school was renamed Kearney State Teachers College, and it began offering four-year degrees in education.

In 1949, the college changed its name again to Kearney State College, and began offering degrees in various other fields such as business, economics, music, art, sociology and psychology. In 1963, the college was granted university status by the state legislature and became known as the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK). Since then UNK has continued to expand its academic offerings with new degree programs such as nursing and engineering being added over the years.
