The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) was established in 1970 through the merger of two existing institutions: the Medical College of New Jersey and the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry. The mission of UMDNJ was to provide high-quality healthcare education and research opportunities to students, faculty, staff, and health professionals.

In 1988, UMDNJ began its expansion with the addition of Rutgers University’s School of Health Related Professions and the School of Public Health. This allowed UMDNJ to become a comprehensive academic health center offering degrees in medicine, dentistry, nursing, allied health sciences, public health, pharmacy, and biomedical research. Over the next decade, UMDNJ continued to expand its academic offerings by adding a number of new programs including a Master’s degree program in public health as well as doctoral programs in physical therapy and biomedical sciences. In 1997 UMDNJ also opened its first satellite campus in Camden County which provided students with access to additional clinical experiences.

In addition to expanding its academic offerings over the years, UMDNJ has also established partnerships with numerous hospitals throughout New Jersey for clinical training opportunities for students.
