University of Massachusetts at Lowell was founded in 1894 as Lowell Normal School, a teacher-training school. The school was established to provide teachers with the skills and knowledge necessary to teach in the public schools of Massachusetts. In 1897, the school was renamed Lowell State Teachers College and in 1960 it became the University of Lowell. In 1975, the university merged with the University of Massachusetts system and changed its name to University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
Since then, UMass at Lowell has seen tremendous growth both in size and scope. Enrollment has grown from a few hundred students to almost 19,000 today. The university now offers more than 150 degree programs across seven colleges and schools – the Manning School of Business; College of Education; College of Engineering; College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Health Sciences; Graduate School; and Kennedy College of Sciences – all within its 131-acre campus on two sites in downtown Lowell.
