The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, also known as UMass Dartmouth, was founded in 1895 as the New Bedford Textile School. It was the first public college in Massachusetts to offer a four-year degree program. The school was renamed Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute (SMTI) in 1960 and then again to Southeastern Massachusetts University (SMU) in 1969. In 1991, it became part of the University of Massachusetts system and was renamed UMass Dartmouth.
Since joining the UMass system, UMass Dartmouth has become a nationally recognized research university with a strong focus on science and technology.
