The University of Massachusetts at Boston was founded in 1964 as part of the University of Massachusetts system. It began as a two-year college and was originally called the Boston State College. The college grew rapidly and by 1974, it had become a four-year university. In 1982, the university changed its name to the University of Massachusetts at Boston in order to better reflect its identity as part of the larger UMass system.
Since then, UMass Boston has grown significantly in size and scope, now offering more than 90 undergraduate majors and minors as well as dozens of graduate programs.
