The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) was established in 1886 as a land-grant college, the Delaware Conference Academy. The academy was founded by members of the African Methodist Episcopal Church with the intention of providing educational opportunity for African Americans in rural areas. In 1890, the name changed to Princess Anne Academy and it became part of the Maryland State College System in 1920. In 1948, the school changed its name to Maryland State College and was accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The school began admitting white students in 1953 and officially changed its name to University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in 1970 when it became part of the University System of Maryland.
In 1974, UMES accepted its first doctoral degree students, marking a major milestone for the university. Since then, UMES has grown into one of the most diverse universities in Maryland with over 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world. UMES is also home to several research centers dedicated to advancing knowledge related to agriculture, aquaculture and environmental sciences. In addition to these research initiatives, UMES is committed to providing access to educational resources for disadvantaged populations through outreach programs such as GEAR UP Maryland and Upward Bound Math Science Program (UBMS).
