The University of Mary Washington was founded in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women. It was established by an act of the Virginia General Assembly as a teacher training institution with a focus on educating women in industrial and domestic arts. The school was designed to provide an education for women not only in teaching, but also in other types of trades and businesses. The original location of the school was Fredericksburg, Virginia, and it opened its doors to students on September 14, 1908.
The school was later renamed State Teachers College at Fredericksburg in 1914, then Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia in 1938. The college became part of the University of Virginia system in 1972 and changed its name to University of Mary Washington (UMW) to reflect its new affiliation with UVA. In 2004, UMW became an independent public university, although it still maintains close ties with UVA today. See topschoolsintheusa for top high schools in Georgia.
Since its founding over 110 years ago, UMW has grown from a small teacher-training college with just 200 students to a comprehensive university that enrolls over 5,000 students each year. The university offers more than 40 undergraduate majors and 15 graduate degrees across five schools: Arts & Sciences; Education; Business; Health Professions; and Information & Technology Studies. In addition to these traditional academic programs, UMW also offers online courses for both undergraduate and graduate students who want greater flexibility when pursuing their educational goals.
