The University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) was founded in 1903 as Northern Maine Normal School, a two-year teacher-training school. The school’s mission was to train teachers for the rural schools of northern Maine. In 1923, the name changed to Aroostook State Normal School, and in 1941 it became Aroostook State Teachers College. During this time, the college included a four-year teacher education program and an expanding set of liberal arts courses.
In 1965, the college was renamed the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) and became part of the University of Maine System. This change opened up additional academic opportunities for students and allowed them to pursue bachelor’s degrees in areas such as business administration, education, health professions and science. In addition, UMPI began offering graduate programs in 1968 with its first master’s degree program in Education Administration. Since then UMPI has continued to add new academic programs while maintaining its commitment to providing quality education opportunities for students from all backgrounds. Today UMPI offers over 30 undergraduate majors and minors as well as several graduate degrees including Master’s degrees in Business Administration and Education Leadership & Policy Studies. UMPI also continues its commitment to serving rural communities by offering outreach programs such as distance learning courses and community engagement initiatives focused on economic development, health care access and environmental stewardship.
