The University of Louisiana at Monroe was founded in 1931 as the Ouachita Parish Division of Louisiana State University. The school was located in the old Ouachita Parish High School building, which had been built in 1925. It was the first two-year college in northern Louisiana and offered courses to teach students basic skills for entry-level jobs. During its early years, enrollment at the school totaled around 400 students and faculty members numbered around 30.

In 1934, the school changed its name to Northeast Center of Louisiana State University and began offering four-year degree programs. In 1937, it became a full-fledged institution of higher learning under the name Northeast Junior College of Louisiana State University. By 1940, enrollment had grown to over 1,000 students and by 1950 it had grown to nearly 2,000 students. In 1951, Northeast Junior College was granted university status and renamed Northeast Louisiana State College (NLSC). It offered Bachelor’s degrees in a variety of disciplines including Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Home Economics and Nursing.

By 1960 enrollment had reached 5,000 students and NLSC became a four-year university offering master’s degrees in several fields including Education and Physical Science. In 1969 NLSC changed its name once again to its current name: The University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM). ULM has continued to grow over the years with enrollment now reaching 8500 students from all fifty states and more than sixty countries worldwide.
