St. Andrews University

St. Andrews University (UK) — detailed description, address, opening hours, how to get there. Information about curricula and courses, reviews.

St. Andrews University is located in Scotland, in the town of St. Andrews, right on the North Sea. This is the oldest university in Scotland and the third oldest in the whole of Great Britain – it was established by papal bull immediately after the famous universities of Oxford and Cambridge. St. Andrews University belongs to the group of “old universities”, which includes two universities in England (aforementioned), four in Scotland and one in Ireland – the University of Dublin. All of them were founded in the Middle Ages or during the Renaissance.

So, St. Andrews University begins its history in 1410. Already in 1423, the university became a state university – it was exempted from paying taxes and taken under the patronage of King James the First. By the 16th century, three colleges were opened at the university, and from the one located in the city of Dundee, the University of Dundee was subsequently formed, famous for its research center.

St Andrews University belongs to the group of “old universities”, which includes two universities in England (above), three in Scotland and one in Ireland. All of them were founded in the Middle Ages or during the Renaissance.

The structure of the University of St. Andrews in the UK differs in many ways from domestic higher education institutions. It is divided into faculties, each of which, in turn, is divided into schools. So, for example, the Faculty of Science has schools of natural sciences – mathematics, physics, biology, as well as social – economics. The other three faculties at St. Andrews are Arts, Medicine and Theology.

The University of St. Andrews became the meeting place for Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Yes, both members of the British royal family studied at this university. William’s thesis was on coral reef research, and Kate, now the Duchess of Cambridge, earned a second-class honors degree in art history. Other notable alumni of St. Andrews University include the poets Gavin Douglas and William Dunbar, the Scottish general James Graham and English Lieutenant General William Drummond, the theologian George Buchanan and the religious reformer Andrew Melville, scholars John Napier and James Gregory, and many others.

There are currently about 6,000 students here, of which about a quarter are international students. This is one of the most international British universities – students from more than 140 countries study here. St. Andrews consistently ranks high in prestigious rankings. For example, the university is among the top five universities in the country, and its school of mathematics in the Faculty of Sciences ranked third according to the Times Good University Guide.

An interesting feature is that the academic “parents” of groups of first-year students are not teachers, but students of senior 3rd or 4th years. At the same time, the group may have not one, but two or even three mentors. Their first acquaintance takes place on the so-called weekend with a twist – a fun celebration held on the last weekend of November. Many other interesting traditions and mysterious legends are connected with the University in St. Andrews.
