The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was founded in 1867 as the Illinois Industrial University. It was the first public university in the state and the second university west of the Appalachian Mountains. In 1885, it changed its name to the University of Illinois, and in 1967 became known as University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The original campus included two buildings and 46 students, but has since grown to include over 45,000 students across 15 colleges and instructional units.
