The University of Illinois at Springfield was founded in 1969 as Sangamon State University. It was established to provide higher education opportunities for residents of the state capital, as well as the surrounding communities. In 1995, it became part of the University of Illinois system and changed its name to the University of Illinois at Springfield. It is part of the University of Illinois system and offers more than 50 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees.
