The University of Houston at Victoria (UHV) was established in 1973 and opened its doors the following year. It began as a four-year, upper-level institution that offered only junior and senior level courses. The original UHV campus was located on the second floor of Victoria’s First National Bank Building, with only seven faculty members and an initial enrollment of 75 students. UHV quickly grew in size, moving to larger facilities on Main Street in 1975. In 1979, the university was granted full accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
In 1991, the University of Houston System Board of Regents approved a plan to expand UHV into a comprehensive regional university offering both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. In 1997, UHV moved to its current location on Ben Wilson Street in Victoria. This new campus featured modern classrooms, laboratories and computer facilities that allowed for significant expansion of academic programs. By 2000, UHV had grown to serve more than 1,000 students with an expanded curriculum that included more than 30 undergraduate majors and several master’s degree programs. With over 50 undergraduate majors and minors as well as nine graduate degree programs offered by five schools – Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; Education; Nursing & Health Sciences; and University College – there are numerous opportunities for students to pursue their educational goals at UHV. The university also offers study abroad programs for students who wish to explore other cultures while earning credit towards their degree program.
