The University of Houston was founded in 1927 as the Houston Junior College. The college was established to serve the educational needs of the city’s growing population. Initially offering two-year associate degrees, the college quickly grew and expanded its offerings to include four-year bachelor’s degrees in 1936 and graduate degrees by 1939. During this early period, the college moved from its original location downtown to its current location on Cullen Boulevard. Through significant growth and expansion over the next several decades, the college eventually achieved university status in 1963 and changed its name to University of Houston.
Since then, UH has continued to expand, becoming one of Texas’ largest universities with an enrollment of over 44,000 students from more than 140 countries around the world. UH has established a reputation for excellence in a variety of disciplines including business, engineering, law, medicine and more. The university is also home to a number of research facilities such as the Texas Medical Center and NASA’s Johnson Space Center which are major contributors to Houston’s economy as well as providing valuable opportunities for students and faculty alike. Additionally, UH has been recognized nationally for its commitment to diversity with numerous awards from organizations such as INSIGHT into Diversity Magazine who named UH one of their “Top 100 Most Diverse Universities” in 2020.
