The University of Hawaii at West Oahu (UHWO) opened its doors to students in 1976 as part of the University of Hawaii system. Initially, the university offered only a few courses and degrees, but it was soon expanded to offer more programs and courses. In 1982, UHWO became an independent four-year baccalaureate degree-granting institution. Since then, the university has grown significantly in size and scope and now offers over twenty undergraduate degrees as well as graduate degrees in such areas as business administration, education, public administration, social work, urban and regional planning and Hawaiian studies.
