The University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH Manoa) was established in 1907 as the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. It was initially part of the Territorial University of Hawaii and was located on Oahu’s east side. In 1920, it became the College of Hawaii, offering a two-year program in Liberal Arts and Sciences. In 1931, it separated from the Territorial University and became an independent college. At this time, its name changed to the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The campus underwent dramatic changes during World War II when many military personnel used its facilities for training purposes. After the war ended, enrollment began to increase significantly and new buildings were constructed. The university also began to expand its academic programs to include graduate degrees in 1950 and doctoral programs in 1958. By 1972, UH Manoa had become a major research institution offering undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in a wide range of disciplines such as medicine, engineering, business administration, education, veterinary medicine, nursing, oceanography and more.
