The University of Hawaii at Hilo was founded in 1947 as the Hawaii Vocational School. It was created to provide an affordable education for students in the rural Big Island. The school consisted of two-year vocational and technical programs, including engineering technology, nursing, business, and agriculture. In 1965, the school underwent a major expansion and became the University of Hawaii at Hilo. This marked the beginning of its four-year liberal arts programs in the humanities, sciences and social sciences.
