The University of Hartford was founded in 1877 as the Hartford Art School. It was the first art school in the United States and was established to provide a quality education to aspiring artists. The school changed its name in 1939 to the Hartford School of Design and then, in 1957, to its current name, the University of Hartford. The school has grown significantly since its founding and now offers over 100 undergraduate programs, 35 graduate degrees, and seven doctoral programs.

In 1969, the University of Hartford opened its first dormitory on its campus located in West Hartford, CT. It is now home to over 5,000 students from all over the world.
