The University of Georgia was chartered in 1785, making it the first state-chartered university in the United States. It was founded as a school to educate citizens and promote the development of “useful knowledge”. Its initial mission included instruction in mathematics, literature, science, and foreign languages. During its early years, classes were taught by private tutors until 1801 when the first president was appointed. After that, more faculty members were hired and the curriculum expanded to include courses in law and medicine. In 1859, UGA established its own Law School and two years later its Medical School opened.
The University of Georgia has continued to grow throughout the decades. In 1906 UGA established its College of Agriculture which later became its College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in 1959. By 1965 UGA had become a comprehensive research university with seven colleges offering degrees in over 150 fields of study. The university has also increased its student body size over time from 600 students when it first opened to over 35,000 students today. Additionally, UGA now offers online programs for both undergraduate and graduate students as well as continuing education opportunities for alumni and community members alike. The university has also established several research centers such as the Carl Vinson Institute of Government which focuses on public policy issues facing Georgia residents today.
