The University of Florida was founded in 1853 as the East Florida Seminary. The seminary was established to provide education to students in the state of Florida, and it operated out of a single building in Ocala. In 1905, the seminary was officially renamed the University of Florida after gaining control from the state legislature. The university continued to grow over the next several decades, and by the 1950s it had become a major research institution. During this time, UF began offering graduate degrees and became home to many renowned scholars and scientists. In 1965, UF established its first PhD program in engineering, which continues to be one of its most popular programs today. UF also opened a new campus in Gainesville during this period, which is now known as its main campus. Today, UF is ranked among the top 10 public universities in the United States and has grown into a major research institution with more than 50,000 students enrolled each year. It offers more than 200 academic programs across 16 colleges and schools—ranging from business and engineering to law and medicine—and is home to world-renowned researchers who are making groundbreaking discoveries every day.
