University of Detroit Mercy was founded in 1877 as the University of Detroit. It was the first Catholic university in Michigan, and was established by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The university was initially located on Woodward Avenue and consisted of a single building. During its early years, the University of Detroit provided education in law, medicine, and business. In 1941, Mercy College of Detroit merged with the University of Detroit to become the University of Detroit Mercy. This merger enabled the university to expand its offerings to include liberal arts and nursing programs.

In 1953, UDM moved to its current location on Livernois Avenue near 8 Mile Road. The new campus featured a number of academic buildings, residence halls, and athletic facilities that accommodated its growing student population. In 1970, UDM became one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States when it joined the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU). Since then, UDM has continued to expand its academic offerings by introducing new degree programs such as architecture and engineering. Today, UDM is a comprehensive Catholic institution that offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and minors across seven schools/colleges.
