The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) was founded in 1965 as an extension of the University of Colorado Boulder. It was established to meet the educational needs of El Paso County, which had experienced a rapid population increase due to military personnel being stationed at nearby Fort Carson and Peterson Air Force Base. UCCS began offering classes in 1965 with just over 200 students and seven faculty members.
