The University of Central Missouri was established in 1871 as the Normal School of Warrensburg. It was the first public institution of higher education in Johnson County and was founded by J.W. Jones, a former superintendent of public schools in Warrensburg, and William Hirth, a former state representative from Johnson County. The school was created by an act of the General Assembly to provide training for teachers and other school personnel. In 1906, the school changed its name to State Teacher’s College and began offering courses outside of teacher education.
In 1919, the college’s name changed again to Central Missouri State Teachers College and began offering four-year degrees for the first time. In 1945, it became Central Missouri State College (CMSC). During this period, CMSC experienced tremendous growth with the addition of new buildings and programs. In 1965, CMSC became Central Missouri State University (CMSU) as part of a statewide plan to expand higher education opportunities in Missouri.
In 2006-2007, CMSU celebrated its centennial anniversary with various events on campus including lectures from famous alumni such as astronaut Dr. Roger Crouch and Special Olympics founder Dr. Eunice Kennedy Shriver. The university also opened its newest building – Elliott Student Union – during this time which is now home to many student services including dining facilities and meeting spaces for campus organizations. Today, University of Central Missouri is a comprehensive regional university offering more than 150 majors across five colleges: College Arts & Sciences; Harmon College Business; College Education; College Health Science & Technology; and Honors College.
