The University of California at San Diego was founded in 1960 as the San Diego campus of the University of California system. The initial plan for the university was set up by UC President Clark Kerr and the UC Board of Regents, who wanted to create a world-class research institution in San Diego. The first classes began in 1964 with just over 1,000 students. As enrollment grew, so did the university’s academic offerings and research capabilities.
In 1965, the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies was established as a part of UCSD, making it one of the first universities in the nation to offer such a program. This program has since become one of UCSD’s most renowned programs and continues to be an integral part of its academic offerings today. In 1972, UCSD acquired its own library system, which now consists of eleven libraries with over 6 million volumes. Additionally, it provided access to rare books and manuscripts from around the world that had previously been inaccessible to scholars in San Diego County. In addition to expanding academic opportunities at UCSD itself, these new libraries also enabled faculty members from other institutions around San Diego County to access this valuable material as well.
