The University of British Columbia was founded in 1908 and opened its doors to students the following year. UBC was the first university established in British Columbia and is a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). The original campus was located at Fairview Point, now known as Fairview Slopes, on Vancouver’s west side. After being granted a charter from King George V in 1915, UBC moved to its current location on Point Grey in 1925. Since then, UBC has grown to become one of Canada’s leading research universities. In 2008, UBC celebrated its centennial anniversary with a number of events and initiatives that commemorated the university’s history.
UBC has grown tremendously since its inception 100 years ago, with over 58,000 students enrolled across two campuses – Vancouver Campus and Okanagan Campus – as well as several satellite campuses located around the world. The university offers a wide range of programs ranging from arts and sciences to engineering and law. Its research activity is among the highest in Canada with over $600 million spent annually on research projects across all disciplines. In addition, UBC encourages interdisciplinary collaboration through initiatives such as the President’s Excellence Fund which supports innovative projects between faculty members from different departments. With a strong commitment to sustainability, UBC has implemented numerous policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote energy efficiency and conserve water resources on campus.
