The University of Bridgeport was founded in 1927 as the Junior College of Connecticut. It was founded by Reverend Joseph H. Fichter, who wanted to create a university that would provide educational opportunities for those who had been denied access to higher education due to financial hardship or other circumstances. The university began with only 24 students and two faculty members and grew quickly, becoming the Bridgeport University in 1941. In 1947, the University of Bridgeport was granted a charter from the state of Connecticut, and it became an independent, non-profit institution.
By the 1950s, enrollment had grown to over 3,000 students, and the University was offering degrees in business administration, engineering technology, liberal arts and sciences. In 1965, UB opened its Graduate School of Education and Health Sciences – one of the first such schools in Connecticut. The school also expanded its offerings to include programs in nursing and physical therapy. By 1970, enrollment had reached nearly 7,000 students from around the world. The University continued to grow throughout the 1970s and 1980s with new programs in fields such as computer science and marine science being added every year. Today, UB is a thriving university with over 8500 students enrolled from all 50 states and over 100 countries around the world.
