The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) is a historically black university located just outside of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Founded in 1873 as Branch Normal College, it was the first public higher education institution in Arkansas for African Americans. It was renamed the Agricultural, Mechanical, and Normal College in 1899 and became a land-grant college in 1902. In 1927, the school was renamed the State Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal College and a year later it became part of the University of Arkansas System. The name changed again to AM&N College in 1972 and then to UAPB in 1975.
Throughout its history, UAPB has served as a beacon of hope for African Americans seeking an education. During segregation, it was one of the few schools that welcomed African American students and provided them with an opportunity to pursue higher education. In addition to providing educational opportunities for African Americans during segregation, UAPB has also been at the forefront of research into agricultural sciences and technological advances that have improved life for people all over Arkansas.
