The University of Arkansas at Monticello was founded in 1909, when the Arkansas legislature passed an act to establish the Fourth District Agricultural School. The school opened its doors in 1911 and was dedicated to providing agricultural education to the citizens of southeastern Arkansas. In 1925, the school’s name was changed to the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical College, and it became a part of the University of Arkansas System in 1927. The college continued to grow over the years and in 1971, it was granted university status and renamed University of Arkansas at Monticello. Since then, UAM has grown into a comprehensive university offering more than 40 bachelor’s degrees, 15 master’s degrees and one doctoral degree.
