The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith (UAFS) was established in 1928 as Fort Smith Junior College. It was the first two-year college in Arkansas and the fifteenth junior college established in the United States. In 1952, it became Westark Junior College and then, in 1985, Westark Community College. In 2002, it achieved university status and was renamed the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith.
UAFS offers over 50 degree programs ranging from certificates to associate’s degrees to bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees. It has over 5,000 students enrolled from across the state of Arkansas as well as other states and countries. The university is also home to several research centers such as the Center for Advanced Research Technologies (CART), which focuses on applied research related to economic development and workforce training; the Center for Excellence in Leadership Development; and the Center for Business Innovation & Technology Transfer (BI&TT). UAFS also houses several student-run organizations that aim to foster leadership development among its student body.
