The University of Arkansas was founded in 1871 as Arkansas Industrial University under the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act. The university was named after the state of Arkansas, and its mission was to provide practical education for the state’s citizens. Initially, it was a small college with only six faculty members and about 100 students. However, in the early 1900s, the school experienced tremendous growth thanks to an influx of students from across Arkansas and the surrounding states. In 1925, the university was renamed University of Arkansas and began offering four-year degrees in engineering, agriculture, home economics, science, law and other disciplines. The university also established two schools—the School of Business Administration (now Fay Jones School) and the School of Education (now College of Education and Health Professions). In 1945, J. William Fulbright became president of the University of Arkansas and led a period of expansion that included forming new academic departments such as journalism, physics and biochemistry. He also opened up admissions to African American students for the first time in 1952. Under his leadership, enrollment tripled from 2200 to 6500 students by 1962 when he stepped down as president. In 1971 John White became president and continued Fulbright’s legacy by expanding student services such as health care through Student Health Services; housing through residence halls; recreation through intramurals; counseling through Student Services; student activities through student organizations; career development through Career Services; library resources through Mullins Library; cultural activities through Fine Arts Center; technology services through Information Technology Services (ITS); international programs via Study Abroad Office; and advising via Academic Advising Center (AAC). Today enrollment stands at more than 27000 students with over 300 different degree programs offered across 10 colleges/schools including Arts & Sciences, Business Administration (Fay Jones), Education & Health Professions Engineering & Information Technology Law Library & Information Science Nursing Public Health & Social Work Agriculture Food & Life Sciences Honors College Graduate School & International Education.
