University of Akron Acceptance Rate, Average GPA, SAT and ACT Scores

The University of Akron was established in 1870 as a small private university. It was initially known as Buchtel College and was named after its primary benefactor, John R. Buchtel. The college was founded to provide higher education opportunities for the residents of Akron and the surrounding areas. At that time, the city of Akron had only been incorporated for five years and many citizens still lived in rural areas. The college offered courses in mechanics, mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering to prepare students for careers in industry and manufacturing.

In 1913, Buchtel College merged with the City of Akron’s school system to become the Municipal University of Akron. This move allowed the college to expand its course offerings beyond technical subjects and into liberal arts, business, law, nursing, and other fields. This expansion led to a surge in enrollment with students from all over Ohio enrolling at the university. In 1967 it officially became The University of Akron after being granted a charter by the state legislature which allowed it to grant degrees beyond just baccalaureate level studies. Since then it has grown significantly, now boasting over 27000 students enrolled across more than 300 undergraduate and graduate programs including some of the most prestigious programs in Ohio such as its engineering program which is ranked among the top 50 nationwide by US News & World Report. Check theinternetfaqs for information about Academy of Art University.
