The University at Buffalo at SUNY was founded in 1846 as a private medical college. It was the first medical school to open in New York State. In 1862, the school became part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system and changed its name to the University of Buffalo. It remained a medical school until 1887 when it began offering other academic programs and degrees. In 1907, the university opened its second campus, located in downtown Buffalo. This new campus allowed for growth and expansion of the university’s academic offerings, which included law and engineering programs. By 1920, UB had become one of the largest universities in New York State with over 5,000 students enrolled.
In 1962, UB merged with SUNY to become part of the larger state university system. This allowed for further growth and expansion as well as access to greater resources from across New York State. Since then, UB has grown into one of America’s leading public research universities and is now home to over 30,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries around the world. Today UB offers more than 300 undergraduate and graduate degree programs across 12 schools and colleges, making it one of the top research universities in North America.
