The University at Albany, part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, was founded in 1844 as the New York State Normal School. The school’s mission was to provide training for teachers in elementary and secondary education. The first class graduated in 1845 with just two students. Over the next few decades, the school expanded its offerings to include a bachelor’s degree program and then a master’s degree program. In 1962, the school changed its name to the State University College of Education at Albany and began offering doctoral degrees. In 1969, it became a part of SUNY and was renamed the University at Albany.
