The United States Air Force Academy was established by Congress in 1954 in response to the need for a more professional and technologically advanced Air Force. The Academy was the first of its kind, and it was quickly recognized as one of the nation’s premier educational institutions. The Academy has since become one of the most prestigious universities in the world, and its graduates have gone on to serve their country with distinction.
The Academy is located near Colorado Springs, Colorado and enrolls over 4,000 cadets each year. Cadets are taught a wide variety of subjects including engineering, science, technology, management, law, and much more. The curriculum emphasizes leadership development through physical fitness, character development, academics and military training. In addition to their studies, cadets also participate in a variety of extracurricular activities such as sports and clubs.
Graduates from the Academy go on to serve in all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces including Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), Air Mobility Command (AMC), Air Combat Command (ACC), Space Command (SPC) and many more. Many graduates also pursue careers in private industry or academia after graduating from the Academy. As part of their commitment to service after graduation, all graduates must serve at least five years active duty or six years reserve duty prior to pursuing other opportunities outside of military service.
