Towson University has a long and distinguished history that began in 1866 when it was founded as the Maryland State Normal School. The school was established to provide teacher training for the growing population of Baltimore, Maryland. For the first fifty years, the university operated as a teacher’s college and trained some of the most successful teachers in Maryland. In 1935, the school changed its name to Towson State Teachers College and expanded its curriculum to include liberal arts courses. In 1963, Towson State College was granted university status and changed its name to Towson State University. During this time, many new academic programs were introduced, including degrees in business, education, computer science, nursing, and engineering. In 1997, Towson State University officially became Towson University and continued to expand its academic offerings with programs in communication studies, global studies and international business. Today’s Towson is a thriving public research university that offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and over 60 graduate programs within nine different colleges and schools.
