Thiel College was founded in 1866 by the Reverend Jacob F. Bernhardt, a minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of West Pennsylvania. The college was named after the family of its primary benefactor, William H. Thiel, who had been a director of the bank in Greenville, Pennsylvania and a leader of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Initially, Thiel College was located in Easton, but it moved to Greenville in 1871 due to financial difficulties and lack of enrollment. In 1880, Thiel College became co-educational and began offering degrees in various fields including theology, mathematics and science. In 1893, Thiel College moved from its original location to its current campus on a hill overlooking downtown Greenville. Since then, the college has grown significantly both academically and physically with the addition of several new buildings including the David Johnson Memorial Library and William Sallade Hall which house classrooms and offices. Additionally, several new academic programs have been added over time such as biology, engineering and business administration which offer students diverse educational opportunities. Today Thiel College is known for its strong commitment to excellence in teaching as well as providing an excellent education for its students that prepares them for successful lives after graduation.
