The Sage Colleges was founded in 1916 by Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage. She wanted to create an educational institution that would provide women with the same educational opportunities that were available to men. The original college was named Sage College for Women and was located in Troy, New York. In 1924, the college opened a second campus in Albany, New York and changed its name to Russell Sage College for Women. Russell Sage College was designed to provide students with a more comprehensive education than what was offered at the original campus. In 1972, the college opened its third campus, The Sage Junior College of Albany, which provided two-year associate’s degrees in various fields of study.
In 1985, Russell Sage College and The Sage Junior College merged to form The Sage Colleges. This merger allowed students to combine their two-year associate’s degree with either a bachelor’s or master’s degree from one of the college’s two campuses without having to transfer schools. The merger also enabled students to take advantage of exciting new interdisciplinary programs such as environmental studies and global studies that combined multiple disciplines into a single degree program.
