The Citadel was founded in 1842 by William Gilmore Simms, a noted South Carolina author and historian. Simms wanted to create a military college that would provide a quality education to the sons of the South. He believed that such an institution would help preserve the culture and values of Southern society, as well as instill patriotism and loyalty among its students.
The school opened its doors in 1843 with just 15 cadets. Since then, The Citadel has grown into one of the most prestigious military colleges in the United States, producing many notable alumni who have served their country admirably. The Citadel was also the first military college in America to admit women as cadets, beginning in 1996. Through its rigorous academic program and dedication to training future leaders, The Citadel has earned a reputation for excellence that is well-deserved. Today, it boasts an enrollment of more than 4,000 cadets from all 50 states and several foreign countries who come together for a unique educational experience that combines academics with character development and leadership training.
