Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) was founded in 1969 as the Texas Tech University School of Medicine, the first medical school in West Texas. The school’s mission was to provide quality medical education and health care services to the residents of West Texas and beyond. In the 1970s, TTUHSC expanded its mission to include nursing, pharmacy, allied health sciences, public health and graduate studies. In 1979, the Texas legislature designated TTUHSC as a separate university within the Texas Tech University System with its own governing board. In 1985, TTUHSC added a School of Allied Health Sciences and established a School of Nursing in 1986. The 1990s marked an expansion of TTUHSC’s reach across the state with new campuses in Amarillo, Dallas/Fort Worth and El Paso. By 2000, the university had grown to include six schools: Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health Sciences, Graduate Studies and Biomedical Sciences as well as a Health Professions Division offering continuing education courses. Today TTUHSC has seven campuses that offer a wide array of educational programs from undergraduate degrees through professional doctoral programs. With nearly 4500 students enrolled each year across all campuses; it is one of the largest health sciences universities in the nation. It also provides research opportunities for faculty and students at all levels through its various research centers located across its campuses.
